Perhaps, Kenny lived under the guilt of the lies he had earlier told me. He could have been surprised, by my silence. Well, I expected him to give an explanation but he didn’t. Yeah, he didn’t swallow his pride. He decided to remain “the man in the house” who never went wrong.
I thank God I had little Angel to take care of. She had become a part of me that I couldn’t afford to let go, or to live without. On one specific Sunday, Kenny woke up earlier than usual and prepared himself for what I didn’t know. Before, he had always updated me about all the plans he had for another day. I laid still, in bed with my eyes closed but watching his every step. He dressed up elegantly and just as he moved out of the room, I called unto him.
“Oh sorry, thought you were still asleep. Good morning love.” He said as he came towards me and pecked me.
“Good morning. Where to?”
“Work. Got a message from a colleague telling me I should be there today, just for a few hours though. Was planning to call you later on the day and inform you.”
“Okay then, have a good day.” I told him, he smiled and left. My mind, at that moment became somehow active. Work, on a Sunday? Good enough I knew his workplace. One part of me told me to follow him up, but another told me to call a friend at his workplace, a few hours later, and ask to talk to him. The latter was probably better. I waited, until one hour passed and that’s when I called Johnny, his bestie, now Lindsay’s ex.
Lindsay never updated me about how they had come to break up. I was waiting for the semester break since that’s when she had promised to visit and tell me the whole deal of what had transpired between them.
“Hey Johnny.”
‘Hey, Kenny’s princess. How are you today?”
“Good, good. Need some help.”
“Yes Mrs.”
“Need to talk to Kenny. I’m trying to reach him but I have failed.”
“Oh dear, sorry Kenny just left a few minutes ago. However, he told me he was going to pass by the town restaurant to grab some coffee, and later come home.”
“Okay then. Thank you.” I said and called off. At the moment, I prepared myself and set off to the so-called town restaurant. I didn’t even understand why I was doing this but my heart kept pushing me. I told Suzie to take care of my baby. I knew his restaurant. His favorite. I just wanted to confirm he was there… I reached just in time, as I spotted him sitting in the corner, with a woman, perhaps in her late twenties in front of him. She had her head bowed and she kept sipping her juice in silence.
Kenny seemed to be doing the talking, as she listened. So, this was it. This man was cheating on me! damn it! I wanted to call Lindsay, and tell her what I was seeing, with my own two eyes, but I hesitated. I felt I had been lied to, just more than enough. I folded my fingers into a fist, and started walking towards the two. The waitress who had come to attend to me stood, shocked watching my steps. She knew, I was watching something…and something was bound to happen very soon.
I moved, and just as the girl raised her eyes to look at the stranger who had just approached them, a blow landed in her face and at that very minute, I took hold of her hair with an aim of putting her into a fight, only to leave her head naked. Sorry for her, she had been wearing a wig and that’s when I felt strongly held.

I kept struggling and fighting. I wanted to finish her off. Yes…but Kenny carried me away into the car and locked me inside. This vividly brought my dream back. I was now running crazy. He went back into the restaurant. Why! Had he gone to console her! Oh my! How terrible! What the heck was this! I started burning inside…I really wanted to strangle Kenny…how could he even do this to me? He took some minutes before returning. Weird images crossed my mind. Was he now kissing her, and telling her how crazy his wife was? I imagined her in his arms, with him comforting her, and telling her all was well. To me, he had not said a word? Was he bewitched?
Tears fell out of my eyes, uncontrollably. A few minutes later, he returned, jumped into the car and started driving home.
“So, you felt good embracing her? Leaving me locked in here like a prisoner and walking back to your side chic! What kind of disrespect is this?” I asked but he didn’t say a word to me.
‘Why do this to me? Why lie to me?” still, he remained dumb to my questions. My anger kept boiling. I knew if I jumped on him, I would put both our lives at risk. I broke down, and wept. Like as if I had lost someone. I wondered for how long he had been doing this. In a few minutes, we were home. I quickly jumped out and rushed to the bedroom. I wanted to pack my bags and leave. I couldn’t afford to stay with a cheating husband. I packed all that belonged to me went to Angel’s room, packed hers too and later called out for Suzie.
“Help me with this,” I told her, giving her Angel and her suitcase.
“Ma’am, you are leaving again? Why? Suzie asked but I had no answers at that moment. As we stepped out of the house, Kenny stood, holding the gate keys in his hands.
“Give us the keys.” I commanded.
‘You are not leaving Dee.” He majestically said.
‘What! You expect me to stay here. No…no..no..my dear. Go on. Go on and bring that slat here. I guess she is much better than I am not so? Am giving you space so that the two of you can enjoy each other as much as you want. Now, if you don’t mind, give me the keys.”
“You will not leave this place, until you calm down.” He said, and walked passed us, back into his room. I wanted to go ask one of the neighbors for the keys, and that’s when I thought of revenge…yes. He wanted me to stay.. okay…fine then. I would stay, but whatever I would do next, it would not be me to blame…it would be him…
